Module 07 — App Reviews
Real reviews · AI-analyzedWhile many users find Duolingo highly engaging, fun, and effective for learning languages and other subjects like chess or math, a significant portion of reviewers express frustration over technical glitches and monetization. Many users are highly motivated by the daily streak mechanics, but others are deeply annoyed by buggy streak-tracking, aggressive notifications, and the restrictive new energy system.
Users frequently mention that the app is highly engaging, fun, and feels like a game that keeps them coming back daily.
Reviewers appreciate the expansion of the app to include subjects beyond languages, such as math, music, and chess.
Several users report making rapid progress and feeling more comfortable speaking and writing their target languages.
Users report completing lessons only for the app to claim they did not, resulting in lost streaks or forced streak freezes.
The transition to restrictive energy mechanics is criticized for limiting daily study time and pushing users toward paid subscriptions.
Reviewers complain about broken AI scripts, incorrect translations, and voice recognition that fails to register correct pronunciation.
Many users find the constant, passive-aggressive reminders and loud post-lesson promotional ads highly annoying.
“I’ve always avoided getting this up but now i can’t get off of it!”
“Duolingo is such an amazing app for languages and other courses like chess, music, math, etc.”
“I love my streak which keeps me motivated even to just do one lesson a day!”
“The only app I consistently use every single day, whether to learn or explore new topics: on day 32 of learning Latin and already stringing sentences together on my free time!”
“Animations take too many time and cant be turned off. Also there are days when i complete a lesson and a day after the app says that i havent, so the streak ends.”
“Used to be about free learning now it’s just a marketing scheme to get you to get super Duolingo by adding the energy system Even if you get everything right you can’t get more then 5 minutes in a day”
“AI makes up everything in this app. It auto translates words incorrectly, the AI voices are incoherent, AI designs your lessons and quizzes you on words you have yet to learn, and the explanations are just awful.”
“The voice recognition is buggy and no matter how many times you report it nothing gets fixed or even acknowledged.”
A major market gap exists for a competing language app that prioritizes accurate, human-verified content over automated AI translations and incoherent voices. Competitors can target frustrated Duolingo users by offering a more generous free tier without restrictive energy limits that block learning after just a few minutes. Additionally, a competitor that guarantees reliable streak-tracking, responsive human customer support, and customizable notification frequencies would highly appeal to users tired of Duolingo's technical bugs and aggressive alerts. Finally, incorporating highly requested languages and systems like American Sign Language (ASL) or Cantonese with real native speakers would capture underserved segments of the market.
- Fix the synchronization bugs that cause completed lessons to go unregistered and break user streaks.
- Improve the accuracy of AI-generated lessons, voices, and translations, and resolve issues with the buggy voice recognition system.
- Provide options to customize or reduce the frequency and tone of push notifications and lower the volume of post-lesson promotional ads.
- Re-evaluate the energy/heart system to ensure free users can study for reasonable periods without being abruptly blocked.
- Establish a reliable customer support channel with human agents to handle account deletion requests and technical bugs instead of relying solely on automated AI responses.

Animations take too many time and cant be turned off. Also there are days when i complete a lesson and a day after the app says that i havent, so the streak ends. It has happened a couple of times already
i’ve had the app for almost 2 months and 2 weeks ago i can’t access my lessons whatsoever i tried deleting the app and reinstalling, signing out and signing back in, and even downloading it on my ipad and i still can’t access my lessons. i even submitted a ticket for the problem and it’s still not fixed! i’m also on the annual plan and i do not want my money to go to waste ,i need this fixed 😭
Very good lesson for everyone
Don’t offer words that have several meanings, or take into account all possible meanings in the answers.
I’ve always avoided getting this up but now i can’t get off of it!
This app is constantly glitching for me now and you took away the learning options that I worked best with and now it just feels like it is a waste of my time and effort.
I’m very disappointed in this app because of this feature. It could have been something great, but I think the energy ruins it all: when I am fighting for my spot on the leaderboard, I always run out of energy to keep going at those lessons! I hope they can be more generous with energy from now on…
Buena app
Me and my 567 day streak would be delighted if I wasn’t deafened by the ads for the promotional Duolingo deals after my lessons 💞 also, the passive-aggressiveness of the alerts can be a bit of a deterrent tbh
Not bad but when you don’t do one day of it it send me message like every five minutes sometimes when I definitely not need it going off so I am asking lower the message thank but it is a really fun app I am doing Korean and math and also music thank you Duolingo
Благодаря этому приложению я постепенно учусь говорить и писать на Английском ◡̈ Duolingo учит вас всему 😊
There should be an option to skip written Japanese. How many people want to learn how to read/write? Especially not Kanji
Sometimes I feel like it doesn’t care about making you the word pronounce correctly, and they just move you along the lesson. Maybe it should teach you more in depth on how to pronounce things better? I don’t know.
I find it very annoying when I get notifications to save my streak late in the evening when I’ve already done it for the day, resulting in me having to do a streak freeze. Sometimes I do it three times in one day and still have to “save my streak” Very annoying. Not worth the annoyance.
Duolingo is such an amazing app for languages and other courses like chess, music, math, etc. Duolingo’s reminders are “interesting” (in a good way :D). The only thing I wish for them to have for a language course is cantonese. I really need to sharpen my skills, but other than that it’s a good app/game to try!
No alphabet or number review. Lots of emails to do your Duolingo. But good teacher.
Duolingo’s great! I love my streak which keeps me motivated even to just do one lesson a day! But ive been really interested in ASL, i have other apps but it doesn’t compare to how great and the way Duolingo’s app functions :(. If Duolingo could add ASL and have an actual deaf person who knows ASL teach and add courses this app would be PERFECT for me!
This app doesn’t deserve even one star honestly it deserves -1,000,000. It makes you cry so much, and in the Spanish language lessons, I am saying the word perfectly and it is mocking me
I love this app very much! I’ve been practicing for almost two weeks straight and I already feel myself getting more comfortable with speaking Spanish out loud.
You have helped me with my Swedish every day
Put this at five so people can see, but the app is good except if you don’t have super Duolingo, it’s so much harder and also it takes forever to load when you’re starting a lesson
Keeps telling me I use streak freezes everyday that I have practiced.
This is a good app if you want learn different language is a very nice app
Makes learning languages fun and it’s very effective.
The repetitive lessons where you just repeat the same phrase 15 times is one thing… it’s another when the AI is just broke. I had a “game” where I got asked to get a pen, and the script was obviously wanting me to ask where the elevator was. I was going crazy because I kept failing trying to get this pen, when it secretly wanted me to ask for an elevator.
It’s just great
Used to be about free learning now it’s just a marketing scheme to get you to get super Duolingo by adding the energy system Even if you get everything right you can’t get more then 5 minutes in a day
I’m learning a lot of French thanks to Duolingo
If you want to learn a language in less than 100 days. Duolingo is the best choice. I have a 168 day streak in chess Duolingo, I’m in a tournament semi finals, and I’m top of diamond league. And I wasn’t always this good. But Duolingo helped me learn in the best way possible. If you want to learn fast. Duolingo is the best choice.
It’s very educational and fun I hope it makes new updates
Duolingo I love using you guys to help me do japan language for fun but I don’t like the battery I like the hearts because they DONT TAKE A WHOLE DAY TO RECHARGE but anyways can you please bring the hearts back
Duolingo is so good i learned so much Portuguese and chess and its like a game it’s so fun I recommend it for people if they want to learn something and you can’t also learn piano, chess, and MATH!!!! Like thats crazy duolingo is so fun so go on Duolingo and learn for free bye!!!.
The only app I consistently use every single day, whether to learn or explore new topics: on day 32 of learning Latin and already stringing sentences together on my free time!
It’s asawm
AI makes up everything in this app. It auto translates words incorrectly, the AI voices are incoherent, AI designs your lessons and quizzes you on words you have yet to learn, and the explanations are just awful. This has turned into such a trash app. The developers should be ashamed of themselves for thinking this app is useful anymore…
Somehow, a giant company is UNABLE and UNWILLING to fix a bug where different people receive different version of what is supposed to be the same language course. I have sent in feedback TWICE trying to get this fixed, and all they have sent me is awful AI responses that make no sense. Save your time, get any other app.
Japan is more easy with duo
I love this app
I’m in sixth grade and wanted to learn Spanish and I love this,It is really fun and the messages they send can be annoying, but it really does help you learn.
The voice recognition is buggy and no matter how many times you report it nothing gets fixed or even acknowledged. Because of this I attempted to delete my account, supposedly an email was sent to me to confirm the deletion, however I never received it and when I reach out to support via their ONLY method I am either ignored or AI gives an automated response that only walks me through the steps I have already taken to delete my account, they never address the real issue. Downloading and spending money on this app was a horrible mistake that I wish I could take back.
This app is more of a game than a lesson… also you will find that many lessons in your language are inaccurate..
Good
I can learn all day
I went to do my 100th day of Duolingo and I tried to do a lesson then the screen went black. Duo pls fix it. I’m just rating it 5 stars so you can notice it
I got this game to play like a little bit and I only have had it for a little bit and I’ve had like a day worth of playtime on this and I bought the subscription but it’s super fun must try
Utterly disappointing! Terrible, and rude.
I like duo
Insane been taking French for a while now
It is a good way to learn how to speak a new language 👌😊🇺🇸
I am very much enjoying learning Italian. I like how the lessons are laid out, and the characters. Not hard to look forward to a daily dose. Gelato Asante
Module 08 — Build Recommendations
Estimated — strategic synthesis, not a guaranteeBuilding a direct clone is highly discouraged due to Duolingo's massive market dominance, but a significant opportunity exists to capture their frustrated users by targeting high-quality, human-verified instruction and underserved niches like ASL or Cantonese.
The competitive pressure is extremely intense, with a 'Very High' level of competition from 5 major established players like Babbel and Rosetta Stone, alongside 12 new entrants last year alone.
Creating highly addictive, micro-learning gamification mechanics like streaks and bite-sized lessons that keep users returning daily without feeling overwhelmed.
Ensuring voice recognition and translations are flawless to prevent the pedagogical frustration that drives users away from AI-heavy competitors.
Capitalizing on high-intent regional keywords and specific underserved subjects like American Sign Language (ASL) or Cantonese to bypass broad language-learning competition.
Attracting mass organic adoption by avoiding restrictive energy systems that abruptly block users from learning after a few mistakes.
Review disadvantages highlight buggy voice recognition, inaccurate AI-generated translations, and incoherent automated voices in Duolingo's current product.
Users highly complain about Duolingo's restrictive energy/heart system that limits free learning time and stops lessons after a few mistakes.
A major technical complaint from users is that Duolingo has glitches that fail to register completed lessons and break streaks, causing massive frustration.
The review market gap conclusion explicitly notes a lack of support for highly requested languages and systems like American Sign Language (ASL) or Cantonese with real native speakers.
Users express frustration with Duolingo's intrusive, loud ads and overly frequent, passive-aggressive push notifications.
Frustrated language learners seeking high-quality, human-verified instruction, specifically those wanting to learn ASL, Cantonese, or looking for a 'heart-free' learning experience.
Freemium model with a generous free tier (no energy limits) supported by minimal, quiet ads, and a premium subscription ('Pro Learner') that removes ads, offers offline access, and provides direct access to human-verified tutor feedback.
4-6 months for a highly-focused MVP with 2 premium language tracks (including ASL) and native speaker audio.
- Launch a highly-targeted beta program on Reddit and language learning forums specifically targeting users complaining about Duolingo's recent AI voice updates and heart limits.
- Optimize App Store Metadata (ASO) around high-intent long-tail keywords like 'learn ASL', 'real Cantonese native speaker', and 'free language app no hearts'.
- Partner with niche language influencers, ASL creators, and cultural educators on TikTok and YouTube to showcase the human-centric, high-quality audio approach.
- Run targeted social campaigns highlighting 'No Passive-Aggressive Owls' to position the brand as a friendly, stress-free alternative.
- Establish local learning clubs and offline community events to drive organic brand loyalty and word-of-mouth growth.
| Risk | Mitigation |
|---|---|
| High content-creation costs due to relying on real native speakers instead of cheap AI voices. | Focus strictly on 2 or 3 high-value, high-demand languages/systems (like ASL and Spanish) to keep initial production costs highly controlled. |
| High user churn once the initial novelty of the gamified loop wears off. | Introduce deep, personalized goal-setting and real-world milestones rather than relying solely on superficial streak metrics. |
| Aggressive user acquisition spending by dominant competitors pricing out your paid ads. | Focus entirely on organic channels, ASO, and community-driven word-of-mouth by serving underserved niches like ASL that major apps ignore. |
While Duolingo dominates the gamified education market, their aggressive push toward AI-generated voices, restrictive heart systems, and intrusive notifications has left a massive base of highly frustrated users. Do not attempt to build a broad multi-subject clone. Instead, build a premium, human-centric alternative that guarantees high-quality native audio, reliable streak tracking, and a generous learning tier without punitive energy limits. By launching with underserved categories like American Sign Language (ASL) and Cantonese, you can capture a highly loyal, high-intent audience organically, bypassing Duolingo's massive marketing spend.
